Carpenter’s Cook-Off Pop-Up 2022!
Carpenter's signature tasting event will be at a fabulous new location this year in Old Town Alexandria! Join us on August 28th, 12-3pm, at 201 N. Union Street, Top Floor (next to the Torpedo Factory).
Sample and judge sweet and savory dishes from local restaurants and caterers including Carpenter's Cafe, Dishes of India, Greenestreet Sweets, Hard Times Cafe, King's Ransom, Mia's Italian Kitchen, Misha's, Pork Barrel BBQ, Summers Flavors, Theismann's, The Warehouse, Union Street Public House, Wagon Wheel Food Truck, What The Chef, and many more! We are very excited that the Jones Point Band will be performing for the first time since the pandemic. Bring your family for an afternoon of delicious food and drink, music, children's activities, and auctions.

Meet a Carpenter's Hero, Peter Lunt!
 We are thrilled to recognize our third Val Hawkins Award winner, Peter Lunt! Peter joined the Board of Directors of Carpenter’s Shelter in 1994 and served as chair from 1996-2001. He was instrumental in securing Carpenter's Shelter's property at Cameron Station as well as the old DMV building on North Henry Street, and facilitating a partnership to provide more housing options for shelter graduates. Peter's intellect, energy, and connection also helped us throughout the New Heights redevelopment of our property into the purpose-built facility that it is today.
"Peter was a leader in all ways - as Board Chair and concerned Alexandrian who never hesitated to think outside the box to end and prevent homelessness," remembers Fran Becker, former Carpenter's Shelter Executive Director. "He turned the board into an engaged, strategic and compassionate board."
Shannon Steene, current Executive Director, adds, "Peter has earned a strong reputation for results. This comes from pairing thoughtfulness, dedication, thrift and the ability to engage others. Peter’s significant, sustained involvement in Carpenter’s Shelter is what has led us to our current positive place. We owe much of our success to the efforts of Peter Lunt."
This award is named after Val Hawkins for his 20 years of compassion and caring for Carpenter’s Shelter and those we serve. The Board of Directors chooses an individual or organization that has demonstrated sustained commitment to the shelter through extensive volunteerism, financial support, and advocacy. Congratulations Peter!

Today's Guest: Nicole Bradley
Nicole joined the Carpenter's Board of Directors in April 2022. She is a Principal Account Executive at Amazon Web Services.
 What brought you to Carpenter's Shelter? I started working at Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2018 and quickly realized the commitment to giving. I wanted to feed my passions and use their goodwill for my local community needs. I was raised by my Mom in rural Loudoun County and by my Dad, Andy Horne, in Old Town Alexandria. Some would call him the “unofficial mayor of Old Town" back in the 80’s, 90’s and into early 2000’s when he passed from cancer. It was his love of Old Town that drove my love. It is where I can come and feel him and his compassion, his strengths and weaknesses.
What would you like our readers to know about Carpenter's Shelter? Carpenter's Shelters doors are open, indiscriminate, non-judgemental, and once crossed, safe. Carpenter’s Shelter is built with love from the community and will accept all help, big and small, to allow its doors to remain open to support all who come through.
What are you most proud of about Carpenter's Shelter?The leadership and purpose. The love and commitment from those that support it are strong. The part of its mission that speaks to me is, "At Carpenter’s Shelter, we believe housing is key to stability". It is often by the grace of God that those who experience housing security have it. It is an assumed given. This should be a right afforded to all, especially children. We need to help lift up families, children, and those in need to give them a solid place to land and to leap from to achieve a good life.

Our community has provided some amazing items for this year's Carpenter's Cook-Off live and silent auctions! Stay tuned for live auction items to be announced in August! Cameron Cafe Commits!
Gerry Hebert (right) helps Shannon Steene load his car to the brim with a very generous amount of toiletries donated at the Cameron Cafe sing-along on June 27. The caring West End community has always had our back, and the sing-along reinforced that! Thank you to all who donated much-needed supplies for our residents as well as funds to continue our work moving Alexandrians from homeless to housed.

We are so proud of our two residents who recently graduated from the women's empowerment and workforce development program, Together We Bake! This program positions women for careers in the food industry while fostering their confidence, resilience, and determination. Congratulations to Ms. C and Ms. G!
